No such thing as a Mormon cult, only a Mormon religion

Someone told me they didn’t mean “mormon cult” as an insult. In what situations is calling anyone’s religion a cult not an insult? They just weren’t really going to worm their way out of that one. Furthermore, they couldn’t stand the word “religion” or to be described as “religious”, so I didn’t understand what was so bothersome about calling us a religion instead of a mormon cult. That’s a whole other subject. When did religion become a dirty word? I think the best people I know are very devout believers in their religion, and I’m talking about members of other faiths too.
